This was a pretty huge (by Singaporean reckoning) open plaza which did not seem to have been designed for any purpose other than that of a parade square as there was neither hard nor soft landscaping.
There was this doorway plonked somewhere in the vast openness. First-time visitors to Kunming have to step up and touch the two Chinese characters; first the one on the right and then the one on the left, and then go through the doorway. Disbelievers risk not having a good time or something like that.
Didn't work for me, though. Had the runs from day 3 until end of trip.
Another item in the plaza was this large water-filled urn into which you drop a coin to land in a small hole at the bottom of the urn.
Just for fun.
It drew respectable groups of travellers, though.
Here's a small cluster of eight or ten exhibition kiosks with small items or mobile phone services on promotional sale
Hopscotch with a friend.
There were limited seats for tired people (below).
That's one of the two gates at opposite ends of the plaza.
Those people were looking at the plan of the old city which was marked on the ground.
Here's a closer look at the city map.
There was a large flat pool with water-spout jets and lighting but it was not working.
According to Lock, he had seen it working when it was first installed, many years ago.
Since then it had never been working again.
