We had a full day coach tour to Nikko about 120 km north of Tokyo. It was a wet day.
First stop was the Toshogu Shrine , the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868. Lavishly decorated, the complex consists of a number of Shinto and Buddhist buildings set in a beautiful forest. It was enlarged into the spectacular complex seen today by Tokugawa's grandson Iemitsu during the first half of the 17th century.
