On the way to Shirakawago we stopped for a rest room break at Mihoro Dam which was built we were informed again, yep you're right, without mortar. The rocks were laid properly laid so that they created a water-tight barrier which was 'flexible' and hence earthquake-proof. I suppose it works, considering the dam's still there after so many years.
We next stopped to admire two 540 year old cherry trees (500 year olds transplanted 40 years ago) that were transplated from the valley floor where they would have been submerged and killed when the dam was completed. The old photos were shot from the visitor centre at the dam. That's the engineer in charge who appreciated old trees.
Did you enlarge the first shot of the trees to see the vertical bamboo prop stakes? and the steel cables from some of the main stakes? Cool, what?
