Shirakawago

This is a very picturesque little village of thatched roof A-frame houses of the Gassho-Zukiri style. They may be single or mutli-storeyed with up to 4 levels, built without nails, orientated to minimise wind damage, stable on the ground floor, and were built with the help of all the villagers who total less than 2000. The best location to take overview photographs is on a hillside plateau which seemed to have been prepared for such purpose. Get more info from The World Heritage of Shirakawago.

The water from streams here was very cold and cleverly put to good use to 'refridgerate' canned and bottled drinks in a very environmentally friendly way.

We stopped by a factory that produces traditional Japanese paper, and each of us produced a sheet for a souvenier. You can buy a set of frames from the souvenier shop to hang your piece of art.
