Day 4/13 - to Dali, but car won't start

Starting time of 7.00am was changed to 7.30am as HueiLock was up all night before watching Euro2008.

However, car couldnt be driven off the car lift as its doors wouldn't repond to the remote thingy.

Siow Wang (in pink) came on his bicycle (he works 15 minutes away) and after some key and remote switch fiddling, got the doors open.

But the car remained resolute and wouldn't fire up.

It was going to be a long day. So hang in here with us as we watch the world go by.

Who says they eat dogs in China?

We came across quite a fair number of them running around freely, and most of them didn't seem the least timid; rather they swagger about like they own China, like this one.

And many of them were Pekinese lion-dogs.

Lion-dog has started to move along as traffic is building up and middle of the T-junction was getting a bit dangerous for dogs.

Check out the morning hawker (at top of photo) selling breakfast stuff to workers on way to work.

Here's a better shot. Click on photo to enlarge it and see what he's selling.

And that lion-dog's gone quite a way down the road. If you enlarge the photo, you can see that it has turned around to have a last look at us.

There's a hawker in white cap and pink top doing brisk business just outside the back door of a restaurant.

Is that a raised large rectangular manhole cover; and some guys preparing to do some work, like clearing some chokage or such problem.

A part of the roadside has been chain-barricaded off by the parking attendants of Lock's apartment (to left of photo), for additional parking space!

Here's the young man preparing takeaway breakfast of some sort of wrapfood or tortilla. That's yew char kway alright, something familiar to us.

And that's his better half and little son.

Pan back to the right, and look! the other hawker (selling steamed pau, I think) has disappeared.

An electric scooter is now parked there.

That smaller black sign with yellow Chinese words (click photo to enlarge)is that of an internet cafe which occupied the entire second floor of that building. It was huge, and offerred broadband service on computers in 4 price ranges.

That scooter belongs to the hawker's wife who has stationed herself on the opposite side (where we were).

And it seems that the larger black sign with yellow Chinese words has disappeared too!

The steamed pau mobile hawker has relocated to the roadside directly in front of the main entrance (guarded by the elephants) of Lock's apartment.

Wooops! here's another Kunming motorist going against the traffic, squeezing the poor cyclist right against the kerb.

Wrapfood hawker is enjoying a lull in his business.

Our stalled rental car has been pushed out to the additional parking space mentioned earlier, andd Siow Wang is looking out for his friend (or relative), the owner of the car.

Hawker's wife sitting on roadside kerb, feeding baby.

Siow Wang looking around for his friend (owner of stalled car).

A Health Dept inspector, filter mask on, making her round.

Black car stopped in middle of road, someone jumped out to buy breakfast from hawker.

Lock went over to see if he could help get stalled car going.

Uniformed staff from establishment coming over to riverside.

For their morning exercise.

An old woman helps her grandchild do his morning business....

.... too closely to this couple who immediately take flight.

Two electric bikes with their cargo of drinking water.

Check out their bike stands.

What's that old man doing?

Peeling tomatoes, then ate them; all six in that plastic bag.

Another car going the wrong way on this one way street.

Hawker and wife packs up stall in a hurry.

Because they saw this little Health Dept van with inspectors coming.

Van with health inspectors turned around (one way street!) and went off.

The old man tomato eater still at it.

Why is she running over here?

Ah, of course, to help him down by the riverside washing equipment etc.

Tomato eater disposes his trash in litter bin.

Hawker's wife prepares to go home.

Her husband hands her their baby.

Baby strapped to her front, she prepares to ride scooter.

And here's the Health Dept inspector on her return trip.

There goes hawker's wife and baby.

The rubbish bins have been brought out from Lock's apartment building.

They're lugged over and emptied into this large cart.

Then along came this road sweeper to clear away that little boy's poo.

Someone's brought some shoes for sale.

The roadsweeper's gone over to the rubbish cart where his female counterparts are.

The Health Dept van of inspectors is back.

Looks like a convention of the Health Dept here.

Another pavement stall owner packs up to go.

Lock has come back to rest his feet.

Penny checks if car's being repaired.

The road sweeper takes a rest.

He may be sold a pair of shoes.

While that woman packs her little kid after watering the roadside tree.

Going down to riverside to wash his barang-barang.

All eyes right.

Something's up.

The stalled car owner has arrived.

Hope he brought a mechanic.

Here's the hawker's wife and her bundle of joy.

Lock and the baby star.
