Day 8 - KYOTO

The hotel room was big, very clean and comfortable. And there was the usual hi-tech Japanese-made western toilet which should be in every restroom worldwide!

Started off on morning tour to Nijo Castle which was home to Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was elaborately beautiful yet very secure with hidden rooms for Samurai bodyguards adjoining every reception room where he met visitors and rivals. Of note is the sensor activated raised pavement or verandah around the main building, consisting of a simple contraption under the verendah planks. These squeek, hence the name Nightingale floorboards.

Nijo Castle was also beautifully landscaped as Tokugawa appreciated the arts and culture, and he encouraged their development in Kyoto, besides thereby assuring the Emporer in Tokyo that he was a loyal Shogun happy in Kyoto without ambitions to strike out for Tokyo.

The Golden Pagoda or Kinkakuji Temple was once a Shogun's residence. It is another of Japan's World Heritage Buildings. You can download a free wallpaper or buy a poster or read up on its architecture. Or catch a webcamera view.
