Heian-jingu Shrine

This monolithic beautiful tori or shinto shrine gate straddles the road that leads to the main gate of the Heian-jingu Shrine. I was standing at the T-junction to take this shot and the gate was behind me.

Heian-jingu was constructed to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of Kyoto as the capital city of Japan.

It's usual that visitors cleanse their face and hands at the well before continuiing with their pilgrimage on the premises. Nowadays you will most likely hear the advice that washing your hands will cleanse you of bad luck and bring on the good luck. For all we know, that could have been the encouragement used all along to get visitors cleansed before they continued

It seems as if there are duplicate shots of buildings, but that's not so; there were quite a few buildings on the site. All in bright vermillion and green-tiled.

Can you spot the closed-circuit security tv camera painted to match?

The whole place was very clean and litter-free. And metalic parts and cappings of the balustrades and fences were polished to gleam.

Note the erected cut branches for visitors to tie fortune papers. And the neat wish plaques of visitors, and sake drums of well-wishes.
