We checked out in the morning and coached from Hakone to Odawara, a small town about half an hour's drive away, from where we transferred to a Shinkansen for Nagoya. There we transferred to a limited express for Takayama. This last stretch through farmlands took about two hours.
We checked in at the Hida Hotel Plaza which was a short walk from the station and went out to check out the town. Discovered too late its rooftop spa hence missed trying it out. The shopping mall in the hotel had an interesting system of drains with big live koi.
Takayama is an ancient town which was declared in 1995 a World Cultural and Heritage Site. You mustn't miss it.
Check out Minshuku Uenoya if you are going on your own without accomodation. It's supposed to be great value for money.
