Read the Guidebooks

Everything about climbing Mt Fuji is in most of the guidebooks of the Prefectures or City authorities such as those of Fujiyoshida and Yamanashi, and the very experienced climbers like Scott Keene and mikomae.

The most important topics are on What to wear and bring to wear later on in the climb, What to bring for sustenance, and How to keep at it and not give up.

Despite it being the summer season with temps around 25C (night) and 30C (day), it gets colder as you get higher (uh, remember your Primary school geography?). On the summit, the temps are 20C less than at sea level. So each od us wore a tee, a long-sleeved shirt or sportshirt like that for golf, preferably of thick material, long pants, thick socks and tough shoes, and a jacket.

We also brought along raincoats with head covers, bought from the ABC shop in Bedok town centre. You can buy the more comfortable two-piece raincoats at any of the 4 Fifth Station shops (photos below) for about 1400Yen. In fact you can buy eveything you need there.

We brought and wore rimmed hats. Make sure they have tie strings so they don't get blown away. Bring a beanie to keep head warm (we didn't but should have).

We had sunglasses for glare protection but wasn't necc as it was overcast. However, they served to protect your eyes from sand and dust that's blown about by the constant and strong winds. In fact, it would be best to bring those flash sunnies favoured by Aussies, or swimming goggles for this purpose. The stuff gets into your nostrils and mouth and also stick onto your lip-balm, so bring one of those SARs masks. Or use a Good Morning-sized towel Tuareg-style wrapped around head for best protection, including your ears.

Water to drink, and chocbars for sustenance, encouragement and reward. A packet of buns from the Family Store is also required per person.

Gardening or workshop gloves to keep warm and prevent blisters which may result from the use of the wooden stick which is very essential to help you balance and steady yourself especially during the descent. Buy the sticks at the Fifth Station shops for about 1000 Yen, add 200Y for bells, and another 200 for a flag. Ask them to determine the correct height of stick for you.

While at the FS shops, buy a backpack raincover, a must.

Lastly, make sure you've got camera, extra camera batteries, and at least a 1-gig memory card or stick.
