Day 1, I would take a bus to Kawaguchiko etc and get accomodations at places such as this or this. Or rent a car and drive there. It takes about an hour to drive up from MF foot to Fifth Station. Or, take an early bus from Shinjuku Station to the Fifth Station and get accomodations at the hostel, for the night before the climb. In any of these ways, I can start my ascend after breakfast on Day 2 and have loads of time to do it.
A reservation for Night 2 accomodation (dinner has to be included) at a Station-8 Hut (here or here)is essential to rest and sleep a while before the last push to the summit in the early hours of Day 3.
The above should get me a worry-free descent down to Fifth Station on Day 3 in time to catch a bus to Tokyo, or for a leisurely drive to digs at the base of the hill.
For those who prefer to do the climb with a guided tour group, they should check out Sunrise Tours, Oriental Brothers, Mt Fuji Mountaineering School and Fuji Mountain Guides.
