ASAKUSA and its Sensoji Temple

Asakusa is a district, like Ginza or Harajuku. Locals pronounce it Ahsahk-sa which throws me off trying to understand their helpful directions. I also kept getting Asakusa mixed up with another district Akasaka.

The Sensoji Temple is a budhist temple built to commemorate the golden statue of Kannon brought up in fishermen's nets from the nearby Sumida River.

Located a short walk away is the 5-storied Pagoda.

First built in 942, it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times.

That's holy smoke alright. Reputed to improve complexion, fortune, etc.

Many tried wafting it into pockets, purses and wallets. From a cauldron of jossticks in front of the Sensoji Temple.

The buildings are closed from 5pm. But the surrounding shopping bazaar remains open till about 8pm.

We had dinner in one of the many eating shops along one of the surrounding streets.
