about Smoking in Japan

Some say Japan is a smoker's paradise. We saw, ran into them, or their smoke. We detected stale cigsmoke smell in hotel rooms, restaurants, elevators and restrooms. Smoking everywhere in McDonald restaurants ie upstairs, downstairs, you name it.

Still, there were signs of attempts to discourage smoking.

There were Smoking Spots in the busy city areas. We spotted one, like a roofed bus stop with a bank of ashtry cigbutt bins in one of the city plazas. In fact we smelt it before we saw it. And there was no standing room there, many smokers were outside the spot. I forgot to take a shot .... aaargh.

Here's a shot of a sign ON the pavement. And surprisingly, smokers comply wholeheartedly. Never saw a Japanese smoker walking. They always stand aside, off the pavement.
