Nishiyama Kako Sansakuro

Then, we got lost!

After Lake Kuttaru, we followed GPS instructions onto the Expressway and successfully did not miss the exit for Muroran which was at Cape Chikyu which was described as a memorable view and to see the Hakuchi Bridge.

Somehow, got lost after the Exit from Expressway into the local roadway sytem. No worries, we thought, a re-setting of the GPS will get us back on track, but, alamak! we unknowingly keyed in the NEXT stop's Map Code!

So we dilligently followed GPS AWAY from Cape Chikyu and onwards to Mt Showa Shinzan. Halfway, we discovered our mistake and decided to skip Mt Showa (which didn't seem a great destination, from the Tour Manual's description) and to go on to Nishiyama Kako Sansakuro.

A damaged building, a flattened car and damaged power cable poles.

This was the site of an eruption on March 31, 2000 which created more than 50 craters and demolished homes and a main road.

A walking course along the damaged road and up and down the terrain was created for visitors to view the ruins. It leads all the way through the valley into the next village near the coast.

A road sign on a fallen lamp pole marks the edge of the damaged road which is now weed-overgrown.

Steam still escapes from the ground to remind that the area is still very much a volcanic area.

We met this old couple aged 80 and 88 years.

They continued along the boardwalk towards the village on the coast.
