Cape Kamui

Down at sea level it was safer to drive; no mist, cloudy with sunny breaks, but very windy. Set GPS for Cape Kamui which was 70 km away. Along the way, stopped to see how some locals enjoy their camping on the coast. Tents were on gravel campground cum carpark. There was no sandy beach as the sea here is rough and coastlines are constantly eroded and required man-made protection. Click on the photo (above, right) and you can see that even the "beach" has to be concrete slab paved!

At the same time, landslide erosion of the mountains that come right to the coastline require man-made retaining wall protection as in photo (above, left). Click on the pic to see the interesting food pantry, campers inside tent, and other details.

The coastal road runs through many many tunnels through the mountains. And many tunnels had been replaced or are being with new ones that are bigger and wider. The photo (above left) shows a new tunnel, and an old one which ahd been sealed up.

Coastline erosion protection is provided with huge heavy concrete blocks (above right). The contractors for the job must have made piles of money!

It was extremely windy and cold when we reached this spot which according to the GPS was Cape Kamui. We didn't fancy taking a 30 minute climb uphil in that wind and approaching rain to get the best view etc and decided to scoot on as it was also getting late and way past lunch time and we hadn't had it yet. Anyway, it was a sort of land's end, though not quite as interesting as that famous one and only Land's End. But it's truly untouched, moody and windy! more windy than at another land's end the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse.

Finally nearing 3.30pm, we reached this restuarant called Fujisushi (recommended by Meng) located at a dangerous bend in the road somewhere in this locality of the Shakotan Peninsula. It looked unassuming, in fact terrible, outside, but was quite nice and comfy within with western and Japanese dining areas ie sit on chairs or floor. Food was good, price not cheap.

Here's another shot of a new tunnel and an old one to the left of it.

Last stop of the day : the Hilton Otaru.
