This old riverside town is a popular tourist attraction. It has been preserved with its old buildings and streets repaired and tidied up and is an attraction not to be missed.
It seemed to me that almost everyone in China was there the same time as us! It was sardine-packed with local tourists.
The layout and juxtaposition of courtyards, gardens and rooms in the old millionaires' homes are fascinating; and their details so very beautiful.
Most rooms open out to a garden or a courtyard eg the dinind room (below).
