Day 2/8 - Strahan, Tasmania (west)

Strahan is about 290 km from Hobart. At an average speed of about 100 kmh, we should be there inside 3 and a half hours, give or take a mountain or two that'll slow us down, we thought. Well, let me tell you that we couldn't have been more way out wrong! It took us a good almost 7 hours. Of course, we are oldies, had to drive carefully as reflexes are slower, didn't dare trust that our eyesight is still eagle-eyed, blah blah. But truthfully, we bet that you'll take just as long to do that drive, because the scenery was wonderful and there were so many interesting things to stop and see and find out more about. And of course, you will need coffee stops and restroom stops. You will regret it if you drove without stopping.

The poor dead thing was a pademelon (please someone correct me if I'm wrong) and we found them at frequent intervals along the way. This particular specimen was just in front of a coffee stop (part of some chalets nearby) in the little town of Derwent Bridge which is a short right turn detour from the main highway to Strahan. We took this little detour (because it's only 3 hours to Strahan!) to have a look at Lake St Claire which is one of those must stop to see places. The lake is in the Tasmanian Wilderness World which is one of the 16 World Heritage Sites in Australia.

Three photos of the Visitor Centre. That's the Lake in the bakground of the shot of the Mrs. Doesn't she look good? and turning 60 a day after Valentine's Day in 2007, mind you.

That's me and the rental Toyota Corolla 4-door manual posing with Cradle Mountain in the background. These two shots may be in the wrong spot here in this post, 'cause I have some doubts we saw CM on way to Strahan. They could be taken after our Strahan stay and on our way to Cradle Mountain itself! The Tasmanian countryside looks identical to that in Scotland. Just barren hillsides for miles and miles. Couldn't resist taking the one below. It looks better if you click on it for an enlarged view.
