The beasts that went Ah... and Mmmm...

The main gate was guarded by two beasts (lions?). One had its mouth open exclaiming "ahh" while the other was closed-mouthed as it was going "mmmm" according to Ms Haroku our petite tour guide and they represent among other interpretations, the beginning and the ending of life, as in birth and death.

Note, we were informed, the rich vermillion colour of many structures, which was typical of Budhism, not Shintoism.

The Japanese practise both Budhism and Shintoism. It is said that a Japanese is born a Shinto and dies a Budhist as Shintoism relates to all nature and the present, and Bhudism believes in life after death. And during certain times of the year as in December, they are Christian-like celebrating Christmas!

But, we were told, Japanese people are generally indifferent to religion. They also practise some aspects of religion as fads; like choosing to get married in church for no reason other than the beautiful ceremony.
